You can download Kodi’s Plex extension from here. You will need to have a premium membership to access it which is important if you have a teenager kid at your home. However, Plex premium option like Audio fingerprinting, parental control, and multiple user control is not available through the plugin. While Plex is brilliant when it comes to organizing stuff, Kodi just takes down everybody with its user interface and versatility. So now you can combine best experiences from both the services and watch it on your big screen. Prior to this, Plex extension for Kodi was available only for members. That said, the real beauty of Kodi is it being the free and open source (GPL) unlike popular software like Plex where at one point you need to pay a premium.Coming back to the original point, Plex, the popular media server software has released their plugin for Kodi users, and it doesn’t ask for premium membership. They call it “a 10-foot user interface” which can span on any TV of any size and even bigger. Sure the software isn't perfect and a few glitches do pop up here and there but the performance especially for transcoding is absolutely awesome.Kodi is one of the open streaming platforms which not only supports a vast variety of audio, video, and image format, it is built to support very large screens. I've populated an ATX board with a Ryzen and a p2200 and I've never run into streaming issues. Yes the prices aren't comparable, but so isn't the performance, but in the longer run, when you go to buy new jbods/devices, the PC with a pentium processor and a Quadro will still work. What works for me is a small box with a Quadro GPU. The performance of those aren't stellar either. Plex they focused on a single headend unit to do decode/re-encode of data and many simple devices running a client GUI. People generally buy a jbod box with some kind of Plex app running on a distro.
Constant server crash was the biggest issue. The processor works pretty well with 1080p H264 and I've never had any issues streaming/playing those from PMS, but as soon as I lurked to the territory of x265/Atmos/4k the performance of the shield was very less than desired.
The place where nVidia shield pro has always fallen flat on its face has always been the Plex Media server and I personally wouldn't recommend it, if you plan to plug in huge drives and/or have x265 content. The wifi has improved a whole lot too where streaming of upto 1 gigabit on a single band is possible. The thought process on Plex development team is that the servers have become more powerful than ever and don't cost a kidney.
It would be difficult for me to go back to a world where these didn't exist. Things like video thumbnails, collection, Plex indexer and intro detects being a few that I personally love and use. While your review is very accurate on basis of performance, Plex over the last few years has added a lot of bells and whistles, which in turn gives performance a back seat.
